The era

Or what was it actually like in those days?
In the seventies, the former tuning company AMG, named after its founders Hans Werner Aufrecht, Erhard Melcher and Aufrecht's birthplace Großaspach, was not yet a Daimler AG subsidiary and luxury manufacturer. In 1970, Werner Aufrecht decided to build a victorious racing touring car, the first ever in AMG history, based on a Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3. In addition to various chassis improvements and conversions to the body and interior, the engine has been modified. Instead of the automatic gearbox, a manual transmission was used. The result was an impressive touring race car, which soon received the nickname "Red pig" in racing circles. The race premiere took place at the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps, where the AMG Mercedes attracted a great deal of attention and sensationally won a class victory and second place in the overall standings against strong competitors. But the racing career lasted only briefly, the car slipped off a few weeks later in Hockenheim off the slopes and was badly damaged. After the reconstruction, he was once again used in the 24 hours race at the Nürburgring and had then been sold to the French defense company Matra, where it was used for trial runs in the development of aircraft tires.

The performance

Or what is it like to drive?
The 300 SEL 6.3 AMG, is the metamorphosis of one of the most spectacular racing touring cars of the seventies, which went down in history as a "red pig". The perfection of the rebuild makes it possible to drive the car without any problems even on longer journeys, even if the driving comfort has to be compromised. The spectacular appearance guarantees the highest attention, both on the road and at any historic car event. As an important milestone, it belongs to the history of the company, which even today as a Daimler subsidiary creates customized high-performance vehicles for individual customer requirements and manufactures in manufactory construction.
