The Mercedes-Benz 170 S, with its larger dimensions, more powerful engine and improved interior, was the further development of the 170 V presented in 1949, with which passenger car production had restarted in Untertürkheim in 1946 after the Second World War. The 170 S series (W 136 IV) consisted of the four-seater saloon, the two-seater Cabriolet A and the four-seater Cabriolet B and, from 1949, with the additional designation "S", was for decades the first vehicle in the category of Mercedes-Benz luxury-class vehicles up to today's "S-Class". With its perfect proportions and extensive equipment, the Mercedes-Benz 170 S Cabriolet A was the epitome of luxury in the immediate post-war years and was built a total of only 830 times at a new price of DM 15,800 at the time.
