The era

Or what was it really like back then?
Mercedes-Benz resumed production after the Second World War in 1946 using established models which had already been produced before the war. The 170 V series became the core of new vehicle production. The company’s strategy was as follows: to continuously improve existing models and at the same time develop new model ranges such as the Ponton series. And so the 170 S was born in 1949, based on the 170 S but longer, wider and better equipped. It had with 52 PS a significantly more powerful engine (40% more powerful than the 170 V) and was available as a saloon or convertible. Its front axle had helical springs with telescopic shock absorbers and double-wishbones. Daimler tradition was also continued in the interior with an elegant combination of fine wood, real leather and high-quality instruments. It is the first Mercedes model with the additional “S” designation which was used in those days for the company’s luxury vehicle models. The top models of the S range were the convertibles which closely resembled the style of the pre-war type 230 (W 153). The elegant two-seater Type A with a basic price of 15,800DM was the top-of-the-range model and the epitome of luxury. Only 830 were ever built in a period spanning 3 years.

The performance

Or what is it like to drive?
It can still perform in the way that delighted its former owners in 1951. It is this almost indescribable feeling of quality that one senses when one gets in: the security and safety while driving, the experience of open-top travel and how it can make everyday life feel so indulgent. Even with the roof closed, it cuts a fine figure and accommodates its two occupants very comfortably. This well-equipped vehicle, in excellent condition, guarantees future increases in valueOr what is it like to drive?
