The era

Or what was it actually like in those days?
In the 1960s, awareness of better road safety measures was increasing. Mercedes-Benz was one of the pioneers in this direction and intensified its efforts to improve the passive safety of vehicles. Director Karl Wilfert and Bela Barenyi were responsible for the visual and technical design of the pagoda concept of the W 113 series – a mixture of formal harmony and originality. The popular name pagoda was created because of the appearance of the concave curved hardtops: a concept designed to improve the indoor space. When the pagoda was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963, groundbreaking security elements found their way into the SL series: such as the rigid passenger compartment, defined crumple zones front and rear, a telescopic steering column with baffle, an interior without edges and corners and radial tires and safety belts as a special feature. A 230 SL with automatic transmission and hardtop in the equipment described above cost about DM 25,000 ex works back then.
